Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is a high-molecular-weight elastomer produced by the copolymerization of butadiene and styrene monomers. It is a type of general-purpose synthetic rubber and was the first synthetic rubber to achieve industrialized production. Currently, it ranks first in both production and consumption of synthetic rubber and is the most important substitute for natural rubber.
SBR possesses excellent comprehensive physical and mechanical properties. Its abrasion resistance, heat resistance, aging resistance, and vulcanization speed are superior to natural rubber, and its cost is relatively low, leading to its widespread application in industry. Based on different polymerization processes, SBR is mainly divided into two categories: emulsion-polymerized SBR (ESBR) and solution-polymerized SBR (SSBR). Emulsion polymerization is dominant due to its high maturity and low cost. SBR is widely used in tires, hoses, belts, rubber shoes, and wires and cables, especially in the tire industry, where its consumption accounts for over 70%.

Tires are the largest consumer of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), accounting for over 70% of total consumption. SBR is widely used in the manufacture of treads and sidewalls for passenger car tires, truck tires, and bicycle tires. When used in combination with natural rubber and butadiene rubber, it balances the tire’s wear resistance, wet grip, and rolling resistance.
Hose and Belt: Used in the manufacture of high-pressure hoses, conveyor belts, etc., utilizing its wear resistance and flexural strength.
Footwear: Widely used in the manufacture of rubber shoe outsoles, utilizing its high wear resistance and low cost.
Industrial and Medical Products: Used in the manufacture of wire and cable insulation, seals, rubber rollers, modified asphalt, etc.
Modified Plastics: Used for impact modification of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS), improving the plastic’s impact resistance.
