Alpha-arbutin, chemically named 4-hydroxyphenyl-α-D-glucopyranoside, is a natural active substance extracted from the leaves of the bearberry plant (Arbutinus arbutin), a member of the Ericaceae family. It can also be synthesized via enzymatic methods. As one of the major isomers of arbutin, α-arbutin exhibits significant effects in inhibiting tyrosinase activity and blocking melanin production, with its activity intensity far exceeding that of the more commonly found β-arbutin in nature.

It is often used in combination with ingredients such as niacinamide (which blocks melanin transport) and vitamin C (an antioxidant) to synergistically enhance skin-brightening effects.
In the pharmaceutical field, alpha-arbutin is primarily used to treat pigmentary disorders such as melasma, freckles, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Furthermore, due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it is also used to treat urinary tract infections (such as cystitis) and respiratory infections (such as chronic bronchitis), providing antitussive, expectorant, and antiasthmatic effects.
