Silica gel, also known as silicic acid gel, is a granular, porous form of hydrated silicon dioxide. It is an amorphous substance that appears transparent or milky white. Produced by adding acid to sodium silicate followed by washing and drying, it is insoluble in water and other solvents, non-toxic, odorless, chemically stable, and non-flammable.

Silica gel is a highly active adsorbent material characterized by high-temperature resistance, stable adhesion, and durability. It is primarily used as a desiccant, anti-caking agent, and adsorbent in column and thin-layer chromatography. Generally, it is categorized into two main types: organic silica gel and inorganic silica gel. Silica gel finds extensive application across various fields, including aviation, marine operations, spacecraft, rockets and missiles, atomic energy, and the electronics and electrical industries.

Function

1. Used as a binder for various refractory materials; it features strong bonding strength and high-temperature resistance (1500–1600°C).

2. Used in the coatings industry; it enhances coating adhesion and provides properties such as stain and dust resistance, aging resistance, and fire retardancy.

3. Used in thin-shell precision casting; it yields high shell strength and excellent casting surface finishes. It produces higher quality molds than sodium silicate (water glass) and serves as a cost-effective alternative to ethyl silicate, while also improving working conditions.

4. Due to its high specific surface area, colloidal silica is suitable for use in catalyst manufacturing and as a catalyst carrier.

5. Used in the paper industry; applications include anti-blocking agents for cellophane, pre-treatment agents for photographic paper, and anti-slip agents for cement bags.

6. Used as a sizing agent in the textile industry; when combined with lubricants to treat wool or rabbit hair, it improves spinnability, reduces yarn breakage and fly waste, increases yield, and enhances economic efficiency.

7. Used as a treatment agent for silicon steel sheets, a dispersant for picture tubes, an anti-slip additive for floor wax, etc.
