Trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) is a multifunctional monomer containing three methacrylate functional groups. Its chemical formula is C₁₈H₂₆O₆. At room temperature, it is a colorless or slightly yellow transparent liquid with low volatility, a high boiling point, and high reactivity. This substance is insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents.

Function

TMPTMA is an indispensable multifunctional reactive diluent in UV curing technology. Under UV light irradiation, it rapidly crosslinks and cures with prepolymers (such as polyurethane acrylates and epoxy acrylates) to form a tough coating film. Due to its three double bonds, it provides extremely high crosslinking density, significantly improving the hardness, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance of the cured film. Compared to other functional monomers, TMPTMA has lower skin irritation, making it particularly suitable for UV coatings, UV inks, and UV adhesives that require skin contact.

In the rubber industry, TMPTMA is often used as a vulcanizing agent. In the peroxide vulcanization systems of specialty rubbers such as EPDM, NBR, and silicone rubber, TMPTMA participates in the reaction to form a crosslinked network, not only increasing the crosslinking density of the rubber but also significantly improving the heat aging resistance, ozone resistance, and mechanical strength of the vulcanized rubber.

In addition, TMPTMA is also used for crosslinking modification of thermoplastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE). By introducing a crosslinked structure, it improves the plastic’s heat distortion resistance, dimensional stability, and solvent resistance.

In the electronics industry, TMPTMA is widely used in the preparation of photocurable solder mask inks, encapsulation materials, and photoresists due to its excellent insulation, heat resistance, and chemical resistance. It can form a hard and corrosion-resistant protective film on the surface of circuit boards.

In the coatings industry, TMPTMA, as a functional monomer, can improve the adhesion, gloss, and weather resistance of coatings, extending the service life of the coating.
